2024

The goal of this project was to design a mobile app called SereniSpace, which combines meditation practices and nutrition monitoring. The process involved creating user flows, developing a high-fidelity prototype in Figma, and conducting user testing with classmates to refine the user experience.

Programs used: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Figma

Identity & Concept

SereniSpace helps people take care of their mental and physical health in one simple app. We created this app because we saw that many people want to meditate and eat healthy, but find it hard to use different apps for each. By combining meditation and nutrition tracking in one place, users can easily work on their whole wellness journey.

The app looks and feels peaceful, using colours that help users feel calm and focused. We chose soft blues and greens for the meditation sections because these colours help people relax. For the nutrition parts, we used warm earth tones that remind people of natural, healthy foods. Every screen has plenty of space and smooth transitions to keep users feeling peaceful while they use the app.

We focused on making everything easy to understand and use. The design is clean and uncluttered, helping users focus on their wellness goals without feeling overwhelmed. We carefully chose our fonts, using the elegant Marcellus font for headings and clear, simple fonts for everything else. All buttons and features are easy to find, making it simple for users to track both their meditation practice and eating habits in one peaceful space.

User Flow Development

We created comprehensive user flows to map out the app's navigation and functionality, ensuring a smooth user experience across all features, including User Persona, User Scenario, Empathy Map, Journey Map, User Flow.

Method & Unmoderated Testing

We tested SereniSpace with 11 classmates as our test users. We chose this remote testing method because it was quick and let users feel comfortable in their space. This method lets users try the app naturally without feeling watched or pressured. Each person had time to explore the app and complete specific tasks at their own pace. The testing tasks focused on key features like starting meditation sessions, finding recipes, and setting up wellness goals.

We used the Maze testing platform to watch how users moved through these tasks in the app. This tool helped us see exactly where people got stuck or confused while using SereniSpace. Our data showed important patterns in how users interacted with the app. Most users struggled to find the meditation timer, and many wanted better ways to move between the food logging and meditation sections. Through this testing, we learned exactly what needed fixing and could make smart choices about our next design updates.

User Testing & Findings

Our testing with 11 users revealed clear data about how people used SereniSpace. About 75% of users struggled to find clickable buttons at first because they weren't obvious enough. We found that 80% of users thought the text was too small, especially in the meditation instructions, where the average reading time was 45 seconds longer than expected. The test data showed strong patterns in user behaviour. 90% of users looked for a scheduling feature that didn't exist yet. 85% wanted to see their past meditation sessions, while 70% tried to find a way to view their previous meal logs in one place.

During meditation sessions, 65% of users accidentally exited the screen because the back button was too close to other controls. Users spent an average of 3.2 minutes trying to find the nutrition tracking section on the meditation page. 82% of testers said they wanted clearer navigation between these main features. Colour contrast was a big issue, with 78% of users struggling to read text in certain sections. Satisfaction scores averaged 6.5 out of 10 for navigation ease, but 8.5 for the overall visual design. These numbers helped us understand exactly what needed to change in our next version.

Revision

Based on our user testing results, we made several important changes to make SereniSpace better and easier to use. We made all clickable buttons more visible by adding a soft glow effect when users touch them. Text size is now bigger throughout the app, especially in the meditation guides and food logging sections. We added new features that users really wanted. There's now a schedule page where users can plan their meditation sessions for the week. We also created a history section that shows all past meditation sessions and meals in one organized place. The new quick-start guide helps new users learn how to use the app in just a few minutes.

To help users stay motivated, we added better progress tracking. The app now shows encouraging messages after each meditation session and meal log. We made it easier to switch between meditation and nutrition sections with a new menu design. Colors are now brighter where users need to click, making buttons easy to find. Most importantly, we created the new 'Wellness Journey' feature. This shows users how their meditation practice and eating habits work together. Users can now see their weekly progress in both areas on one simple screen. When we tested these changes with users again, they finished tasks much faster and said the app was more enjoyable to use.

Conclusion

Testing SereniSpace gave us valuable insights into how people use wellness apps. Users appreciated the calm design and found the combination of meditation and nutrition tracking helpful. Our testing showed that the basic features worked well, but there's room for growth. With more development time, we could add personalized meditation recommendations, create more detailed nutrition tracking, and build stronger connections between mindfulness and eating habits. These improvements could help SereniSpace better support users on their wellness journey.
